CINCO LUGARES SOBRE A FRAGILIDADE

for electronics (sound installation)

“Cinco Lugares Sobre a Fragilidade” (Five Places about Fragility) is a work by composer Hugo Vasco Reis, conceived for a multi-channel sound installation, divided into five movements and based on field recordings made in five municipalities in central Portugal (Vila de Rei, Oleiros, Proença-a-Nova, Mação, and Sertã).

With this work, the composer intends to highlight some of the acoustic fragilities of the sound environment that surrounds us and that were found during the field recordings, such as: walking on the top of a mountain largely impermeable to civilization; birdsong and some insects; the ultrasound and infrasound of wind turbines near populated areas; the sound of the tradition of handcrafted tapestries, on the verge of extinction; and the sound of flowing water in an area with scarce water resources.

Throughout the work, one can listen to sounds approximated to the original field recordings, combined with more processed sounds that are more distant from those sources, in an attempt to recover the sound environment and reveal its meaning through narratives that tell and conceal stories.

This work was commissioned by Academia dos Produtores Culturais, and supported by Culture/EEAGrants Programme, DGArtes (Ministry of Culture of Portugal), SPAutores, and Antena 2 (Portuguese classical radio).
