DEMORA

for percussion quartet and electronics

“Demora” is a work for percussion quartet and electronics, created as part of an experimental collaboration between composer Hugo Vasco Reis, performers Drumming GP, and visual artist Pedro Vaz.

The idea for the work originated from a month-long walk along the Pyrenees Route (GR11), between the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean, undertaken and documented by Pedro Vaz.

According to him, more than a physical journey, it was a prolonged encounter with the landscape, an exercise in attention, resistance, and attunement between body and place, in which walking became a form of listening.

Based on this premise, Hugo Vasco Reis composed a work that incorporates the thought of philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, who argues that sound is not a fixed phenomenon. It propagates, vibrates, and transforms. When we listen, we are not merely passive receivers—the body resonates with the sound. This implies that the listener participates in the sonic phenomenon through the relationship between body and space, in a vibratory
and relational process.

“Demora” unfolds as a work about listening and mediating. Hearing small sounds, tiny sounds, associated with nature, its transformation and translation. Between percussion, electronics and image, the work proposes an immersive experience where attention becomes artistic material.

This works was supported by Ministry of Culture of Portugal, Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores and Antena 2 (Portuguese classical radio).
